HAVING a baby is an amazing time in a couple's life but many are unprepared for the massive changes it can create in a relationship.
Sleep deprivation, financial stress and taking care of a tiny baby can all create pressures between parents at a time when the household is already experiencing challenges.
Joanne Love, of the The Hub at Caringbah, wants parents to be prepared for this time and will soon run a course for parents-to-be called Bringing Home Baby.
She said current antenatal education focused on birth and breastfeeding but little attention was paid to relationships.
"Giving skills to couples is important," she said. "Just before baby comes is a good time to be open to education and I would like to see it as part of the antenatal program."
The program is based on leading international studies on new parents that resulted in more positive parenting interactions as well as lower rates of depression for both parents.
"We don't acknowledge our partners enough," Ms Love said.
"When dads are involved children have a higher cognitive level at six months and become better problem solvers."
The four week course will start on October 7; details 9525 4971 or cchub@bigpond.com
