A WATCHTOWER, a wind turbine, travelling exhibitions, an underpass, a footbridge and an international hotel — these are some of the suggestions that people have made as a way of improving Cronulla.
They were among ideas that could potentially change Cronulla Plaza, Peryman Square and the central business district which originated from the Cronulla Design Ideas competition.
Sutherland Shire Council ran the competition with categories for professional, student and community entrants.
In the professional category, long-time Sutherland resident and architect Vic Lake describes Cronulla as "an uncut precious stone".
He suggested an underpass tunnel on the Kingsway and Croydon Street creating an extension of the plaza, and creating some underground parking.
"Train users can arrive at Cronulla with direct access to the mall or beach via the park," Mr Lake said.
An overhead footbridge with escalators from the mall to Peryman Square would improve traffic flow.
It was a mother, Fiona Benyon, and her daughter Brooke Benyon, 9, who took out the community prize with their entry including a Cronulla Plaza play area with a crab-like climbing frame.
They also suggested markets, festivals and travelling exhibitions.
"You could have a big crab structure on the site with seed pods and shells and a performing arts auditorium with a roof made like a scallop shell," Ms Benyon said.
Joint student category winner David Richardson wants the central plaza to connect with other areas of Cronulla, and lessening traffic.
He suggested a history and entertainment centre, a watchtower and a five star hotel with cafes around the train station.
Other student category winner Michael White suggested more vibrant, public friendly areas, cafes, restaurants and footpath LED lighting.
The winning entries will remain on the council's website until September 28 so people can cast their votes in the people's choice award.
Prizes include a $10,000 first prize.
