IN his roles for Opera Australia, Martin Buckingham has been Rodolfo in La Boheme, Sultan Achmet in Candide and First Prisoner in Fidelio.
Starting on Saturday, March 24, the Arncliffe tenor will be Gaston in La Traviata, singing his heart out on Sydney Harbour with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as backdrops.
Gaston is the guy who introduces Violetta Valery, a famed courtesan, to the young nobleman Alfredo Germont, who has long loved her from afar. Of course, everything does not end well.
This huge production features spectacular sets, beautiful costumes, dazzling lighting, fireworks and a nine-metre chandelier sparkling with Swarovski crystals suspended above a purpose-built, shimmering stage on the waters of the harbour.
Starring in this production are sopranos Emma Matthews and Rachelle Durkin who will alternate in the role of Violetta, international tenors Gianluca Terranova and Ji-Min Park who alternate in the role of Alfredo, and opera favourites, Jonathan Summers and WarwicSk Fyfe.
The opera, at Mrs Macquaries Point,
Royal Botanic Gardens, will be on until April 15.
