Transport accessibility and airport train fares will be discussed tonight at a community meeting in Gymea.
‘‘People are concerned about transport accessibility,’’a director of Community Engagement Services and a spokesman for Sydney Alliance, Stewart Prins, said.
‘‘Those who need lifts include the elderly, those with disabilities, parents with prams who struggle with stairs.
‘‘The other issue is for workers who travel to the airport.’’
It has been estimated that around 18,000 people work in the airport precinct, and that 18 per cent of those people live in the St George-Sutherland area.
Sydney Alliance spokeswoman Asha Ramzan said the state government’s recent decision to install lifts at Arncliffe station came about after a campaign by local groups to improve station accessibility.
Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and representatives of religious groups, community organisations, trade unions and schools are expected to attend tonight’s meeting.
‘‘The state government has announced a $21 weekly cap on the station access fee for Opal card users; however, this will still leave thousands of low-wage workers paying an extra $1000 a year to use the airport train stations,’’ Ms Ramzan said.
The Sutherland-St George Assembly will be at St Catherine Laboure Primary School, 123 Gymea Bay Road, Gymea, starting at 7pm.
