THE surf lifesaving club season is open and members of the four Bate Bay clubs — Cronulla, North Cronulla, Wanda and Elouera — and the three Royal National Park clubs — Garie, Era and Burning Palms — are out and about getting ready for competition and their surf patrol teams protecting ocean swimmers and the community who visit the beaches in the shire.
Like many sporting clubs and organisations funding is harder to find — sometimes akin to searching for gold at our beaches with a metal detector.
North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday proudly took possession of a new inflatable rescue boat to help keep swimmers safe.
Cronulla RSL and Tradies are to be commended for their generous support in grant money for North Cronulla's new surf rescue craft.
Heavenly AFL season
WITH the winter codes now over, St George AFL Club's under-19s team brought home a trophy to the district, winning the AFL Sydney competition on Saturday. The Saints defeated North Shore Bombers, 11.11 (77) to North Shore's 4.6 (30) at Blacktown International Sportspark.
Coach Derek Waters played 36 footballers under the St George development program this season which includes players from the St George and Sutherland AFL Academy for players aged 16 and 17. The academy training is based at St George's home ground, Olds Park, Penshurst.
St George club secretary Richard Orton said the grand final win was a wonderful achievement. He said the club's youth policy and development of home-grown talent was paying dividends.
St George's Tim Tegg was named the best player on the ground for his outstanding game in the grand final.
Perhaps some future Swans or GWS Giants may emerge from the crop.
