Kurnell Stingrays junior rugby league club under 9A’s team after winning their local Cronulla-Sutherland premiership were invited to compete in the inaugural and recently held Immortals Challenge at St Mary’s.
The Immortals Challenge is a competition for the under 9’s to under 14’s age groups featuring the grand final winners from the different districts.
They played for a trophy named after a rugby league Immortal.
The Stringrays under 9A represented Cronulla Sutherland and played in the Andrew Johns Cup. Former Newcastle and Australian halfback Andrew Johns is one of the game’s Immortals.
The Stingrays won their first three games finishing top of their pool.
In the semi finals, Kurnell Stringrays, then defeated Beacon Hill in the semi final, 18-12.
In the grand final, the Stingrays lost 12-0, but were gallant in defeat.
They were the only only team from Cronulla Sutherland to make the grand final.
Earlier this season, the Stingrays also won the state all primary schools 10B age championship.
In the last six years the Stingrays have risen from the bottom, the club had just one team in 2008. Now the Stringrays have ten teams, five teams out of a possible seven that could play in finals did so in this year’s Sharks junior league finals series.
Three teams won their grand finals, the 9A, 12C and 13B teams.
