ST GEORGE first-grade opener Stewart McCabe started the season where he left off last summer, with a sparkling 88 of his team’s total of 274 against UNSW on Saturday at Hurstville Oval.
McCabe plundered plenty of runs last summer and his start to this season may foreshadow further big totals for the top batsman.
The left-hander slammed 13 boundaries and one six from 74 balls faced to be top scorer.
Next best was Ashton May (87) as the Saints lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a lively pitch.
May was also aggressive, belting nine fours and hitting four sixes from his 107 balls faced.
The pitch had plenty of ‘‘green tinges’’ with last month’s rain and warm weather providing plenty of ‘‘juice’’ in the wicket for the faster bowlers.
‘‘The pitch always gives some assistance to the bowlers in the opening session and especially this time of the year,’’ St George club president Kevin Greene said.
The Saints’ bowlers then had UNSW’s batsman in strife at 3-69 at stumps.
Play starts at 9.30am this Saturday at Hurstville Oval.
Will Stewart McCabe be a prolific run scorer for Saints this summer?
