AUSTRALIAN Test batsman Steve Smith played for Sutherland on the opening day of the new grade cricket season.
The right-handed batsman flew out with the Australian team on Sunday to Dubai for the approaching one day and Test series.
But Smith showed his loyalty to play for the club before he was called away on duty for country.
The plucky batsman made 42 for Sutherland in their first innings of 281 against Fairfield Liverpool on Saturday at Rosedale Oval, Warwick Farm.
Smith was solid in his innings but middle-order batsman Mitch Brown topscored with 79 from 129 balls faced.
He was supported by Peter Saroukos (45) and Matthew Hughston (33).
Fairfield Liverpool reached 0-19 at stumps.
The second day play's starts 9.30am this Saturday at Rosedale Oval.
