WHAT was once an activity confined to gentlemen's clubs is now becoming as common as an aerobics class.
Although the stigma attached to pole dancing has changed, some people are still reluctant to attend a class.
Concerns of "I wouldn't be strong enough" or "I can't dance" or "I'm not flexible enough" are common for people who would like to try it but are not sure what it is really like.
Bobbi's Pole Studio, Miranda, will have an open day on Saturday, October 11, so people can have a look and try a free beginners class.
"Everyone started as a beginner," owner Vanessa Brecht said.
"We all struggled to hold our body weight when we first began.
"A huge part of why pole dancing is so rewarding is seeing your progress."
Pole dancing builds strength, increases flexibility, co-ordination and dance skills and provides a full body workout.
"There is nothing as thrilling as finally getting a move that you first saw as impossible to achieve," Ms Brecht said.
Coco Munro has been a pole dancer for 8½ years. "We have so much fun dancing together, it's a really fun atmosphere at the studio," Coco said.
"I've made some amazing friends here. Pole dancing is great for your self-esteem.
"Girls who were once concerned about their body image are now much more confident after being around such amazing people and dancing in a way that really makes them feel good about themselves."
Teachers and students will perform at the open day and answer questions.
Bookings essential: 9522 2933.
