The Sandringham club began its tasar class comp on Sunday.
Georges River Sailing Club's publicity officer Jenny Sorensen said there was an enthusiastic group of tasar class sailors that race each year.
"Club member boats have risen from a steady handful over the years to 16 this season," she said.
"This increase has been the result of the popularity of the tasar as a boat to sail and the valuable support given to sailors from the club and members."
The tasar is a low weight, high-performance sailing boat, designed for two people.
Members held a recent working bee to build new boat racks and spruce up the boat storage shed with new coats of paint.
Sorensen said new timber flooring had been installed in the downstairs club room and there were new change rooms.
The club will be hosting one of several Travellers Trophies and association training days during the season and learn-to-sail classes, run by NB Sail Sports, at 9am on Sunday, October 12.
Classes are held for adults on Sunday mornings.
