NATHAN Fitzgerald and Daniel Fallins bowled Sutherland to victory in their first-grade season opener on Saturday at Rosedale Oval, Warwick Farm.
After making 281 on the first day's play the previous Saturday, Fitzgerald and Fallins then stepped up with the ball.
Skipper and paceman Fitzgerald took 4-27 and leg-spinner Fallins finished with 3-72.
"It was a dry wicket and Daniel bowled well — he would turn the ball on glass," Fitzgerald said.
He said fellow opening paceman Tom Pinson, originally from Yass, bowled well.
Sutherland also had wins in the second, fourth and fifth grades.
Third grade had a narrow loss.
In second grade, Sutherland made 306 with Adam Whatley making 115, James Bills 44, Tom Doyle 36 and Trent Smith unbeaten on 29, defeating Fairfield Liverpool (269). Devlin Malone took 4-68, Adam Whatley took 2-16, and Nathan Whittingham 2-36.
In third grade, Sutherland made 277 with Ryan Almond top-scoring with 82, Shayne Smith made 80, Josh Horner 40 and Josh Zywietz 34.
They lost against Fairfield-Liverpool 8(dec)-284. Sutherland's Josh Zywietz took 2-38 and Nick Sharman 2-41.
A classy 145 from Dylan Smith paved the way for Sutherland's fourth grade's scoring of 4-350 to beat Fairfield Liverpool, 113.
Oliver Selby made 64 not out, James Arnold, 45, Will Fraine, 38, and Alex Watkiss was 31 not out, Fairfield Liverpool reached 52 without loss on their second knock.
In fifth grade, Sutherland scored 6-240, Matt Wright made 93, Ryan Thomson 75 and Will Vandermaal 23, defeating Fairfield Liverpool 202, Jayden Brown took 3-43, Pat Driscoll 2-14, Ryan Thomson 2-22, and Angus Fallins 2-35.
Sutherland club historian Tom Iceton reports several milestones were reached by their players.
Wicketkeeper Daniel Rixon reached 450 dismissals in all grades. Batsman Adam Whatley's 115 was the highest score in second grade against Fairfield Liverpool, surpassing the previous best held by Nick Howard (105) in the 1992-93 season.
Sutherland host Bankstown in round two at 10.30am on Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval.
On Sunday, Sutherland host Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup matches.
They play University of NSW at 9.30am; Mosman play UNSW at 12.15pm; and Sutherland play Mosman at 3.30pm.
Tom Iceton said Twenty20 club Sydney Sixes will run a coaching clinic at Glenn McGrath Oval on Sunday, 11am-2pm.
