They are still investigating but assured residents that it was not a ‘‘random incident’’.
The area was quiet this morning but one resident said she was shocked by events of the weekend.
A man in his 30s died on Sunday about 12.30am after being shot several times in a laneway next to a house on the corner of Bell and Schofield streets, Riverwood.
Campsie police went to the scene and arrested a Riverwood man, 34, but he was later released.
Campsie Local Area Commander, Superintendent Stephen Blackmore, said the shooting was not believed to be a random incident.
“I’d like to reassure members of the community that this incident was a targeted shooting that is the result of a feud between two individuals,’’ Superintendent Blackmore said.
“Both men and the location (in Riverwood) are known to Operation Spartan, however, the shooting was not related to an outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG).’’
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Operation Spartan was established in January to investigate gun crime and criminal gangs across Sydney.
