Brett Cross of Bexley North was playing Candy Crush on his iPad on Tuesday night during the Sydney storm when he received a strange call from his neighbour Peter.
Peter was calling for help because his car was floating around his front yard.
Mr Cross has lived in Coveney Street for 20 years but has never seen his street flooded before.
‘‘It was a shock, you never think it’s going to flood where you are,’’ he said.
‘‘The car was turning around like in a whirlpool and it was rubbing up against the fence.’’
Mr Cross said he was amazed when he saw the floodwater rise up by three metres in 10 minutes, stranding the car.
As the water rose, it pushed the car over an embankment, through a fence and into a canal where it ended upside down.
‘‘You see it on TV but you never think it will happen to you,’’ he said.
The floodwater inundated his garage and he lost two Harley-Davidson motorcycles and power tools.
‘‘I’m devastated. I’ve worked so hard on them,’’ Mr Cross said.
‘‘But it is great that everyone is safe.’’
Peter and his family spent the night in Mr Cross’s spare room but no one had any sleep.
‘‘I think we’re just in shock at the moment,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ll be cleaning up for a while.’’
