WITH formals season in full swing, dresses are flying off the racks left, right and centre.
We visited Something Nice boutique at Kogarah this month to see what styles teens were going for in 2014.
There we met Annie Li of Rockdale, who is preparing for her St George Girls High School, Kogarah, year 12 formal at the Shangri-La in the city on November 13.
"My mum is making my dress, which is a two-piece," Annie said.
Annie was browsing with friend Lora Adzic of Mortdale, who was seeking inspiration for her Bethany College end-of-school formal.
"I've been finding heaps of jumpsuits around, but I'm not sure what I'll go for - I want something colourful," Lora said.
Elana Mirtsos of Something Nice said white was a strong trend this year.
"This Hollywood-inspired trend is fresh, modern and always chic," she said.
"Girls are opting for more classic and timeless styles that they will be able to gain some mileage from.
"After all, when you are spending up to $500 or more on a dress you certainly want to be able to wear it more than once."
Elena also said the midi trend has gained style strength.
"The benefit of choosing a midi is that you can wear it again to the races or a wedding without it being too formal," she said.
"The labels including Shona Joy, Pasduchas and Manning Cartell really deliver here.
"If the girls invest in a beautiful floor-length gown then it is always a very special and defining moment.
"Every girl wants to feel like a star on the day of their formal.
"It's their time to shine and celebrate the end of this chapter in their lives."
