CFA Snake Valley captain Ron Lockyer said the fire began when a burn off got out of control.
"This should be a real wake up call for people burning off," he said.
"It's too late in the season, it's too dry and too warm now to be doing it."
Mr Lockyer said the fire got to 150 acres (60 hectares) in size, burning through the blue gum plantation and then scrub as it moved west.
One nearby resident left his house, but the fire was contained before it posed any danger to the property.
Snake Valley - Mortchup Rd and Riley's Rd have been reopened although the CFA are still fighting the fire.
A total of 12 CFA units attended the blaze.
A 56-year-old man was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation, but did not have any further injuries.
The fire is now listed as under control.
