Dumped asbestos has been in the Royal National Park, near Audley weir, for the past 10 days, claims a Bundeena resident.
The large pile of asbestos which appears to be from house renovations is just up the hill from the weir heading towards Bundeena at the entrance to a trail just off Sir Bertram Stevens Drive.
The resident, who has driven past the illegally dumped pile for 10 days, told the Leader that he and other residents were concerned that no action had been taken to remove the asbestos.
‘‘It has been there for at least 10 days,’’ he said.
‘‘It has been cordoned off and tagged with a danger asbestos warning sign so the authorities must be aware of it.
‘‘It is just before the turn off to the Anglican youth camp.
‘‘It’s a few hundred metres from a popular tourist spot, so why hasn’t it been cleaned up?’’
An EPA spokeswoman said this afternoon: ‘‘National Parks and Wildlife Services reported the incident to the EPA’s Environment Line on 10 October 2014.
''The EPA contacted National Parks and Wildlife Services on 10 October 2014 to discuss the incident and give advice on applying for funding to the clean-up the waste.
''The EPA has offered assistance in the investigation, however at this stage there are no further avenues of inquiry.
''Parks and Wildlife Services have taken samples and are waiting on the results. As a precaution the area has been fenced off. If the waste is confirmed as hazardous, National Parks and Wildlife Services will be eligible to apply for funding to clean-up of the waste.’’
