ELITE level women's football will be showcased in the local derby between Sydney FC and Western Wanderers at 3pm on Sunday at Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.
Five of the best St George and Sutherland Shire's talented footballers are playing in the W-League game.
Sydney FC captain Teresa Polias, of Brighton-Le-Sands, and her teammate Servet Uzunlar, of Jannali, are pitted against the Wanderers' Demi Koulizakis, 16, of Monterey, Grace Henry, 19, of Grays Point, and Jordan Baker, 17, of Gymea. Polias, 24, is skipper of Sydney FC and plays for he Matildas, the national women's team.Uzunlar, 25, has played 26 times for the Matildas and been an integral part of Sydney FC winning a championship with them.
Earlier in the competition, Sydney FC won the first clash, 2-0, at the Wanderers' home ground at Club Marconi.
Polias and Koulizakis both played with Carss Park FC in the St George Football Association. They didn't cross paths until the W-League competition.
But both women have connections, as Polias went to Endeavour Sports High School, and Koulizakis is a student there now.
Polias is now a teacher at McCallums Hill Public School at Roselands.
Polias said the local derby is always a tough encounter.
"It was a competitive match in the first round," Polias said.
Koulizakis said the W-League is a top level competition for women and girls to enhance their skills and playing profile.
"It's a good competition," she said.
