British comedian Jimmy Carr came under fire on social media after making a tasteless joke about Oscar Pistorius' motives for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.
On Tuesday, Judge Thokozile Masipa handed down a maximum five-year jail sentence to Pistorius for manslaughter, but it didn't take long for the 42-year-old comedian to push the envelope at the Q Awards in London.
Carr's gaffe began when he mumbled out loud about how the lines for the men's bathroom were extremely long at the event.
"So frustrating. All I'm saying is I can understand it from Oscar Pistorius' point of view," Carr said.
A 200-strong crowd, which included Ed Sheeran, Boy George and Simple Minds, were taken aback by the comments and seemed to not know how to react.
But Carr was in no mood to change the topic of conversation as his cringeworthy comments continued.
"That's not the controversial bit," Carr said. "Here it comes...I blame her (Steenkamp). If she hadn't been in that disabled toilet, none of this would have happened."
When Carr realised he wasn't generating the required amount of laughs he was after, he tried to defend himself by saying: "It's the f---ing Q Awards, come on."
The crowd were stunned by Carr's comments, given how soon they had come after arguably the biggest trial in South African history.
"I think it went alright," Carr told The Mirror after the awards had concluded. "I'm going to go home and write some new jokes."
Clearly the audience weren't the only ones outraged by the joke, as social media went into overdrive with hundreds of people showing their displeasure at his tasteless and tacky one liner.
The problem with Jimmy Carr's jokes was not the subject matter, it was that if you're going to go dark, you have to be FUNNY. — John Edginton (@JohnEdginton) October 23, 2014
I reallt don't like Jimmy Carr's humour, it's crude, unfunny and a low-brow attempt to be controversial — Shauna McGrath (@ShaunaNiCraith) October 23, 2014
