Kogarah High School’s class of 1958 is getting together for a trip down memory lane this year.
The former students of class 3CA at the then-intermediate high school, are now all in their 70s, and next month is the planned hurrah for the boys from the block.
There were 43 students in that class that year, with 34 studying commerce and nine studying French and Latin — among business, book-keeping, woodwork and metalwork.
And who could forget the the occasional sting of the cane for pencil rattling, racing against Olympic swimmer student Neville Hayes who stole the show at every carnival, and an ‘‘old bird teacher’’ with a soft heart who lived for discipline.
Former Carlton resident Chris Maitland is organising the reunion.
‘‘Most of us left school that year which was equivalent to what is now year 9,’’ Mr Maitland said.
‘‘I’ve managed to contact more than a third of the class through electoral rolls.
‘‘Some may have passed away but we’d still like to find more before our reunion.’’
Most of the men had not seen each other since they walked out of the school’s gates.
‘‘With one or two exceptions where guys stayed in touch, there is still quite a buzz among those found,’’ Mr Maitland said.
‘‘We suspect many more are still living in the area.’’
The class of ’58 reunion is at 99 On York in the CBD on November 1.
