ANDREW DeMayo of Oatley, a finalist in the student volunteer section of the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, spends a fair bit of his spare time helping out.
Andrew, 20, has been a volunteer for five years with the Recreation Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC), which provides sporting and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities.
He assists weekly with the club's junior basketball program and occasionally helps out with adult basketball, table tennis, discos and other activities.
The third year history and politics student at the Sydney campus of the University of Notre Dame Australia is also active in a social justice group and was involved in the establishment of an arts and sciences society.
RSAC executive officer Jenny Bombardieri said the organisation was fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers.
"Andrew has been a loyal and reliable helper for five years, which is pretty impressive for someone who is 20 years old," she said.
She said RSAC welcomed volunteers for a range of activities, including various sports, administration and fund-raising.
The awards were announced on October 16 at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.
Categories included student, youth, adult, senior and volunteer team.
Andrew was one of three finalists in the student section.
