ROCKDALE Council has released its draft biodiversity strategy as it moves to combat a decline in native vegetation and the invasion of introduced species.
The strategy, on exhibition until November 19, outlines key actions that will reverse the decline in Rockdale's natural habitat.
the council prepared its first biodiversity strategy in 2007 but in the past seven years there had been extra strain put on the natural environment.
Research done as part of the draft strategy shows large areas of vegetation are steadily decreasing from weed invasion. Introduced species, such as the Indian mynah, are also taking over from small insect-eating birds, including wren, thornbills and fantails.
The council proposes to implement a restoration and monitoring plan for all natural areas, as well as a priority-species management plan to protect endangered species' habitats.
