Police are treating the death of a woman whose body was found at Nobbys Beach on Wednesday as suspicious until the cause of her death is established.
Police have said there are no visible signs of injury on the woman's body, which was found by surfers about 6am.
The passenger log of the cruise ship the Rhapsody of the Seas, which entered the Port of Newcastle at daybreak, has also been checked. Nobody is missing.
The woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, was tattooed and wearing jewellery and police are appealing to the public to help identify her.
Police are also checking the missing persons register and fingerprint records.
A crime scene has been established and detectives and forensic investigators are currently at the beach.
A more extensive search of the beach is underway, but so far nothing of interest has been discovered.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
