After impressing audiences and executives alike with hosting turns at the Emmys and the Tony Awards, actor Neil Patrick Harris is to front his own TV variety show.
In a deal which could only make sense in Hollywood, the US network NBC has bought the rights to the UK variety show Saturday Night Takeaway, but plans to ditch the title and air it on another night.
The show will be based in New York.
NBC has not fully clarified its plans, but it is understood the show would not air before 2015.
"We're not going to rush this," NBC executive Paul Teledgy told US media. "We'll take our time and make a great show."
It is believed NBC is considering producing 10 episodes a year.
While music and talent reality shows have come to dominate the variety space, NBC is gambling with a traditional variety show.
Though the format is popular in the UK, international broadcasters, including all three of Australia's commercial broadcasters, have at different times attempted to develop local versions of Saturday Night Takeaway.
In the UK the show is hosted by Anthony McPartlin, 38, and Declan Donnelly, 39, who are best known as "Ant and Dec".
But the show's success stems, to some extent, from their popularity as a hosting partnership, a working relationship which began when the pair hosted children's programs as teens in the early 1990s.
Harris will host his show solo, but in his favour at least is a proven track record on that front.
He will follow his critically applauded turns as Emmys and Tony Awards host by fronting 2015's Academy Awards.
