GAVAN Twining scored 6921 runs in a first grade career spanning 17 seasons at two clubs, Parramatta and Wests.
The former opening batsman says he is doing the next best thing in his eyes to playing — that is coaching.
Twining, 43, is head coach at St George.
He and assistant coach Peter Jackson look after all grades.
Jackson was head coach in recent seasons and now is Twining's turn.
Twining said he understands and responsibility entrusted to him.
"St George is a club with such a rich history," Twining said.
'The schoolteacher said he was humbled by the appointment.
Twining was fielding coach at the club for several years before he took on the head coaching role.
"Fielding has always been a great passion of mine," Twining said.
Twining said the club has terrific depth consistent ability to develop talent.
After consecutive victories St George first grade cricket team came back to earth on Saturday against Eastern Suburbs at Waverley Oval.
The Dragonswere dismissed for 177 with Eastern Suburbs in the box seat at 2-141 at stumps.
Damian Bourke top-scored with 36, opener Stewart McCabe made 29 and tailender Terence Howes made 24.
Skipper Stewart McCabe had won the toss. He is deputising for the injured Trent Copeland who is sidelined with back stress fractures.
Day two play starts at 10.30am this Saturday.
