WITH an extensive scrapbook accumulated from two decades of playing, former Sydney FC skipper Mark Rudan is well armed as he takes the reins as new coach of the Rockdale City Suns.
Rudan, who had a distinguished playing record in Australia and overseas, replaced former Socceroo Wally Savor as Suns head coach just days before Rockdale’s 2-1 victory over Manly United on Sunday.
‘‘I’ve got a lot of respect for Wally as a person and as a player, so I wanted to run it by him first,’’ said Rudan of Kingsgrove.
‘‘He gave me his full blessing and understands what coaching is like.
‘‘If you want to be a coach it is inevitable that you’ll be sacked, if you’re lucky enough to have a long career.’’
In October Rudan became the club’s technical director, focusing on the pre-teen ages in developing programs and working with youth coaches.
He retired from playing after Sydney United’s Premier League grand final loss to Sydney Olympic last year.
‘‘When I was still playing, I was always a keen student of the game,’’ Rudan said.
‘‘I’ve got a big black book with a lot of information.’’
Rudan’s football knowledge has been appreciated by Fox Sports where he provides commentary and analysis on A-League fixtures.
‘‘Coaching is something that I always wanted to do, but it’s just a matter of being offered something in the first place and something that is of interest.
‘‘When you’re presented with an opportunity you’ve got to look at it objectively. And the big thing is: can you improve the team.’’
Rockdale have had a poor start to this year.
Their five previous outings had netted just one draw.
‘‘There’s a platform there to work on definitely,’’ Rudan said. ‘‘I’m happy with the players and the performance on the weekend.
‘‘It’s a good starting point for me but there is a long way to go. I’m big on quality, intensity and attitude.’’
Rudan has an ongoing commitment to the Suns but is yet to agree to a long-term deal.
The Suns, in third-last spot, play APIA Leichhardt Tigers from 8.15pm tomorrow at Lambert Park, Leichhardt.
