A town called Whitlam. Well why not? Ever since Gough Whitlam's death 11 days ago, his name, with the best intentions, has been up for grabs.
Within hours of his death, ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher gave him the traditional Canberra send-off, announcing a new suburb would be named in his honour.
A day later the Australian Electoral Commission confirmed his name would also be considered for any new federal electorate division.
And now the City of Blacktown wants to honour its Whitlam legacy by twice honouring the former prime minister.
Blacktown mayor Stephen Bali has written to Premier Mike Baird and Opposition Leader John Robertson seeking bipartisan support in having a new suburb and a railway station named Whitlam.
"Without doubt Blacktown City, western Sydney and Australia are better for the contribution of Mr Whitlam. In Blacktown City, we will forever honour him", Cr Bali said.
He proposed the new suburb in the North West Growth Centre.
Whitlam station, Cr Bali said, would make an ideal stop on the north-west rail link.
As baby-boomer Australia moved into western Sydney, Gough Whitlam chose the Blacktown CBD to deliver the Labor election campaign speech from the stage of Bowman Hall in the November 1972.
Seventeen months later, in April 1974, he returned to Bowman Hall to launch his next election campaign. After being re-elected, he referred to Bowman Hall as his "Temple of Victories".
"He lived in the region and he understood the needs of its people," Cr Bali said.
"Mr Whitlam introduced vital reforms to education and public health and, famously, it was Whitlam who finally provided the homes of western Sydney with sewer connections."
