NICK Cake’s Shop is the stuff sweet dreams are made of, and even the business card describes the store as ‘‘a world of cakes’’.
If you can’t find a cake or biscuit you like among the 100 or so lines here you probably don’t deserve cake.
Manager and owner Con Theos said the original store was opened by his father-in-law Nick in 1972 at Marrickville.
The Brighton-Le-Sands shop opened 16 years ago and people have come from miles around to sample the wares.
Mr Theos has regulars from Townsville, Perth and New York who make a beeline for his store when they stay at the nearby Novotel Hotel.
‘‘One guy from New York comes here for the rum babas when he is in town,’’ he said.
From cannoli to Black Forest cake by the slice and multiple versions of baklava it is all here. Not forgetting the shortbread biscuits, sold by the kilo.
And the whole tortes. And profiteroles. And much more.
When it comes to baklava, ‘‘Aussies buy it by the piece, Greeks buy it by the kilo,’’ Mr Theos said.
He declined to name a favourite but did say the enormous French vanilla slice is the ‘‘cake I fell in love with as it was the first cake my wife gave me’’.
Sweet stuff indeed.
