IT WAS a grand final hoodoo which outstripped that of the Cronulla Sharks.
But after 60 long years the wait is over for Sylvania Bowling Club which celebrated its inaugural men’s pennant win recently.
Club coach Lyndsay Makin said it was a long time coming.
‘‘We were worried [we’d never win one],’’ Makin said. ‘‘We’d been runners-up quite a few times but it was a monkey off our back.
‘‘We’d done up the greens and got a few new players from other clubs. It’s something we set ourselves for, and we won it.’’
The club’s No.3 pennant team beat Taren Point 59-47 in the zone 13 final.
‘‘It’s pretty exciting and a bit of a relief that we’ve finally done it,’’ Makin said. ‘‘It’s a pretty stiff competition and we’re not the biggest club. Our pennant selectors worked very hard to make sure we got there.’’
The team will now head to Inverell to contest the NSW championship in August.
‘‘Hopefully, it’ll lead us on to bigger and better things,’’ Makin said.
