PROTESTERS from Animal Liberation NSW plan to picket Stardust Circus throughout its one-month stay at Wolli Creek.
The circus, which has three lions, monkeys, horses and performing dogs among its animal acts, is at Cahill Park at Wolli Creek until July 22, and has been well received.
But spokesman for the protesters, Phillip Hall, said circus animals lived a miserable life, being transported from place to place and required to perform.
"A lot of people don't want the circus here," Mr Hall said, adding that Rockdale Council should never have given the circus permission to use the park.
However, Stardust spokeswoman Jan Lennon said it was ridiculous to think the lions at Stardust could go back to living in the wild.
"These animals are born in captivity; they wouldn't know what the wild was," Ms Lennon said.
She said all their animals were treated as part of the family, and were trained using positive reinforcement.
"The lions get chicken breast fillets for training. They get to work for something a bit different from their usual diet, which is beef and horse," Ms Lennon said.
