FOR a get-together with the girls it’s hard to go past an old fashioned high tea, where dainty nibbles and cups of tea are consumed at a leisurely pace.
The newly opened Ramsgate Castle means ladies who partake of high tea no longer need to travel to the city.
Owner Sandy Isbester has spent 15 months transforming a plain venue to a palace fit for a king. Vintage furniture, purchased at auctions and from overseas, adorns the venue and tables are dressed with her grandmother’s tablecloths.
As a caterer with more than 25 years’ experience, Mrs Isbester knows what the clients like.
Prior to opening, she had a group of 50 friends and family members critique her high tea so she could be certain it was spot-on.
For $38.50 guests dine on a selection of delicate finger sandwiches including smoked salmon, and baby quiches, and freshly baked scones with jam and cream, macarons, lemon lime tarts and various seasonal sweet treats.
A selection of teas is served, and a glass of bubbly is available for an extra $5.
‘‘Everyone who has come in has said there’s nothing like it - that’s the whole idea: to be different,’’ Mrs Isbester said.
‘‘It is the nicest feeling that it is homely; that’s what I wanted.’’
High tea is served 11am-1pm, and 2pm-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and by appointment during the week; bookings: 0435 390 860.
