The Hungry Mum - Farmers' markets are the real deal

LOOKING for a bit of fresh air not too far from home? Camden is an easy 60-minute drive from Sutherland Shire and if you head out there on the second and fourth Saturday of the month you can explore the lovely farmers’ markets.

The markets are on the edge of lush farmland with a stunning pastoral vista and are small but perfectly formed.

You’ll find artisan bread makers, small-scale butchers selling free-range meat and eggs, fruit and vegetable stalls, handmade soap, milk and cheese producers, and more.

The sellers are the producers and it is wonderful to chat to people who are passionate about their business.

The day we visited there were a couple of hot food stalls, adding an enticing aroma to the mix, and the olive and fresh dip stall was quite busy.

Fresh flowers, homemade jams and chutneys, gourmet cupcakes — everything looked and smelt great.

There were even live chickens for sale, hopefully destined for a life as a pet rather than the dinner table.

Just footsteps away from the markets is a large community garden where a group of scarecrows stand guard over a field of vegetables and herbs.

Misses 4 and 6 loved checking out the scarecrows,

and especially their interesting attire.

The markets are held from 7am to noon, Lower John Street, Camden.
