THERE were three motorcycle accidents in the Royal National Park at the weekend and one of them proved fatal.
A Dolls Point man, 68, was killed when he veered off the road on his motorcycle and hit a rock wall at Bundeena on Sunday, Sutherland police said.
The day before, a rider fell off a motorbike in almost the exact same spot but survived the crash.
Sutherland police said there were many reasons why the park was a dangerous place to ride but said speed was the worst culprit.
Inspector Jason Heywood said the accidents did not come as shock because it was the first sunny weekend in several weeks and motorcyclists were making the most of the good weather.
"We always see the RNP as a danger for motorcyclists. A majority of the time it's inexperience and speed," Inspector Heywood said.
"When it's wet it is always a problem — but how do you stop it?"
He said police often conducted speed operations and wished people would heed warnings.
"Slow down and enjoy the view. Don't go so fast: it's not a racetrack."
St George Motorcycle Club president Steve Wyres said the Royal National Park was a dangerous place for riders. He said accidents were caused by a combination of bad road conditions and speed.
"It is a very windy road with low visibility, blind corners and quite often there is a lot of water on it," Mr Wyres said.
"Quite often it is the fault of the rider going too fast but sometimes it is cars coming around the corners on the wrong side. It is a dangerous place for riders and you need to be on your toes all the time."
Inspector Heywood said the fatal accident occurred on Sir Bertram Stevens Drive, about three kilometres north of Bundeena Drive. Police are investigating whether it was driver error or a mechanical failure.
The metropolitan crash unit is also investigating the death of Paul Snepvangers, 58, of Kirrawee, who was found next to his motorbike at Waterfall in the Royal National Park in June.
No charges have been laid so far but police believe Mr Snepvangers died after he collided with a truck on McKell Avenue.
