Man chokes

A MAN, 81, was in a critical but stable condition yesterday after choking on food at Northies, Cronulla, an Ambulance NSW spokesman said. Paramedics were called about 1.30pm.

CPR was performed on the man before he was taken to Sutherland Hospital. At the time the Leader went to print yesterday the man remained in a critical condition.

Grenade scare

CRONULLA police station and a neighbouring building were evacuated for about 15 minutes after a man brought in a hand grenade he found in a garage on Tuesday. Police said anyone who finds explosives should not touch them but ring triple-0. Army disposal officers assessed the device and removed it without incident.

Drugs, snake found

A WOMAN, 29, was expected to appear in court yesterday after police allegedly found drugs, an air rifle, a carpet python and a stuffed kookaburra in a Jannali house on Tuesday.

Police charged the woman with six drug-related offences and one count of possessing an unregistered firearm.

Sutherland police arrested the woman after executing a search warrant at a Seventh Avenue house.

She was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court.

Deer hazard

A MAN, 37, escaped without injuries after he swerved off the road to avoid a deer and crashed into a rock wall in the Royal National last Wednesday, Sutherland police said. The Prestons man was driving a Citroen on Sir Bertram Stevens Drive near McKell Avenue about 7.30pm. No one else was injured and the car was towed from the scene.

Alcohol lesson

FOUR underage teenagers caught drinking at Engadine will attend a police-run course called Your Choice instead of receiving a fine, Sutherland police said.

The youths from Engadine, Heathcote and Helensburgh, all aged 16, were stopped by police on Woronora Road about 8.40pm on Saturday. UDL Vodka cans, Smirnoff vodka and Tooheys Blue beers were poured out by police after the group tried to hide the alcohol.

Your Choice teaches young people about the dangers of underage drinking and police and guest presenters talk with young offenders. Sutherland crime prevention officer Dave Hayes said it was a timely reminder that it was an offence for parents or adults to buy alcohol for minors.
