No golden Olympics joy for Stingers

AUSTRALIA’S water polo gold medal dreams are over after losing 11-9 to the US in extra-time this morning.

Cronulla water polo’s Nicola Zagame scored the Australian’s fifth goal.

The semi-final loss means Australia will play Hungary from 3.40am on Friday and has set a bronze medal as their next target.

smh.com.au reported scores were locked 3-all at the end of the first quarter, and by half-time Australia were 6-5 in arrears.

Sports writer Robert Dillon said it would have been even worse except for a penalty save by Aussie goalkeeper Alicia McCormack.

Elsewhere, former Kirrawee High student Eloise Wellings did not progress to the final after finishing 15th in the first heat of the women’s 5000 metres.
