HURSTVILLE voters at the local government elections on September 8 will choose from a field of 70 candidates to fill the 12 positions.
The Hurstville Council area comprises three wards: Penshurst, 26 candidates, Peakhurst (20), and Hurstville (24), and includes Allawah, Beverly Hills, Carlton, Hurstville, Kingsgrove, Lugarno, Mortdale, Narwee, Oatley, Peakhurst, Penshurst and Riverwood.
Of the 69 candidates, 37 are independents, 12 Labor, 12 Liberal and 8 Unity.
Each ward has four Liberal and four Labor candidates. The eight Unity people are split between Penshurst and Hurstville wards.
Sixty candidates will be campaigning for 15 positions on Rockdale Council, following the close of nominations last week.
Of the council's five wards, third (Brighton-Le-Sands and parts of Rockdale) and fourth (Bexley and Carlton), have the most contenders with 15 candidates in each signing up to contest the six spots on offer. All up, 27 of the 60 candidates are independents, three are from the Greens and the remaining 30 are split evenly between Labor and Liberal.
Kogarah council's 12 seats will be contested by 47 hopefuls.
Independents have the largest share of the ballot, with 14 people seeking election without party backing.
The Liberal and Labor parties are each represented by 12 candidates, while the Greens, Unity Party and Kogarah Residents Association have three candidates each.
The council is destined for a shake-up as only eight councillors are standing for re-election.
The densely populated east ward, which takes in Hurstville, Allawah and Carlton, has 14 candidates.
Residents near Kogarah and Beverley Park will have 13 north ward candidates to choose from
