Monterey resident Genevieve Clay-Smith, 26, is the 2015 NSW Young Australian of the Year; one of four award winners announced at a ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on Monday night.
Miss Clay-Smith was recognised for her work as a filmmaker and social entrepreneur, helping people who face disadvantage.
Through her not-for-profit organisation Bus Stop Films she works with diverse and marginalised communities to create short films that voice their experiences.
She has won national and international praise for her short film Be My Brother which won first prize at Tropfest in 2009.
The NSW Award winners will join recipients from the other states and territories as finalists for the National Awards which will be announced on January 25 in Canberra. See more in Thursday’s Leader.
