The third and final version of the draft Sutherland Shire local environmental plan 2013 will go the state government for final approval this week after the council meeting Monday night debated changes down to the line.
The latest version was approved by the council and will be sent to Planning Minister Pru Goward later this month.
There are two significant changes.
There was a request for 10-22 Merton Street, Sutherland, to be down-zoned from 40 metres to 20 metres.
There was a request that a decision to rezone the eastern side of University Road, Miranda, for high-rise be deferred for further investigation on its potential impacts to Miranda Public School’s sensory playground for special needs students.
The LEP preparation has taken several years and been exhibited three times in the past 18 months; the council received 4901 submissions.
The latest submission of LEP 3 prompted 1350 submissions.
Deputy mayor Carmelo Pesce moved Monday night that the council adopt the LEP.
‘‘Out of 153 councils in NSW, there are only three left which have not done their LEP, and that includes Sutherland Shire,’’ he said.
‘‘If we don’t pass this on we will be a laughing stock.
‘‘I ask for no changes and we push it through and make changes through later amendments.
‘‘Otherwise, this will keep going on and will be considered in the next council term.’’
Mayor Kent Johns said he was pleased and relieved that the council had voted to approve the draft LEP.
‘‘We have a document that is a compromise in places but sets a strategic plan for the next 10 years to provide for the housing needs of the shire,’’ he said.
The council hopes the LEP will be gazetted by the end of the year.
