Re: "Work starts at fatal spot" (Leader, October 2).
The measures proposed by public officials for the tragic and coincidental Railway Parade, Kogarah, crash site are little more than a placebo for public shock and hysteria, not disease treatment.
The intersection is no more unpredictable than most when approached with care, skill and control, having good visibility and halting traffic while pedestrians cross.
Both pedestrian deaths were coincidental, not road flaws, and the roadside solutions proposed miss the mark, diverting emphasis away from administrative and regulation flaws and objective solutions for random "driver error" and wilfulness accidents.
Coincident and random driver error or wilfulness issues can't be addressed with subjective and random social advertising, arm's-length regulation, driver education, pinning legal blame, or traffic lights.
Moving the bus stop won't change the cause — although a remembrance plaque would be appropriate.
Authorities can do more by stopping out-of-control vehicles and initiating mandatory proven crash and pedestrian avoidance technology legislation for error-prone and wilful drivers, which regretfully includes everyone at some time.
