The state government will introduce a three-month limit on the parking of boat trailers in suburban streets.
Roads Minister Duncan Gay said trailers parked longer than three months in the same place would be impounded.
‘‘Fines also will be issued for unregistered boat trailers left on the street,’’ he said.
St George and Sutherland Shire residents have complained about the practice of long-term trailer parking when the government announced last year it was looking at taking action.
Mr Gay said this week that for too long communities near the water had ‘‘played host to boat trailer dumping grounds and it’s just not on’’.
‘‘At present, there is no limit on the time boat trailers can park on streets and we have a situation where trailers are being abandoned for months and even years, robbing people of valuable car parks.’’
Mr Gay said the government also would invest $5 million to build dedicated off-street boat trailer parking facilities, especially in metropolitan Sydney.
Councils and private businesses would be invited to register their interest.
My Gay’s office is yet to release details on how and when the three-month limit will be implemented.

Duncan Gay said boat ownership was ‘‘growing by the thousands every year’’.
“We need a clear plan in place to manage the current and increasing demand in boat trailer parking and this proposal is an important step in the right direction,’’ he said.
