An Earlwood man, 28, has been arrested after he was caught driving 80km/h over the speed limit at Carss Park last night.
St George police recorded the man travelling along the Princes Highway at 150km/h in a 70km/h zone at 10pm.
He was arrested after a brief pursuit.
He was issued with a traffic infringement notice for speeding over 45km/h, had his licence suspended for six months and his number plates confiscated.
It was one of three incidents in which drivers were clocked at 80km/h over the speed limit last night.
NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said despite police presence there were some drivers who still wanted to risk lives by speeding.
‘‘There are three drivers, and their families, who should take some comfort out of our officers intercepting them overnight, as opposed to facing the tragedy of losing their lives in a speed-related crash,’’ he said.
‘‘With 289 lives lost on NSW roads so far this year — which is six less than the same time last year — these drivers risked adding to the road toll.
‘‘We are about saving the lives of these drivers, their passengers, and other innocent road users.
‘‘Those who continue to speed at more than 45km/h over sign-posted limits can expect the same treatment: fines of $2252, licences suspended for six months, and registration plates or cars confiscated for three months.’’
