CRONULLA Surf Life Saving Club’s Short Course Carnival attracted more than 1000 competitors from 20 clubs and from all over the state on Saturday.
The fourth annual event on Cronulla Beach was held in bright sunshine with competitors aged from under 8 up to 60 participating.
Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club carnival convenor Greg Allum said the event was a big success.
He was thrilled by the participation from clubs and the community spirit.
‘‘We were very happy with how the event went,’’
Allum said.
He said major sponsors Channel Seven, Coca-Cola, Frank Doran and Caltex contributed along with many other smaller sponsors providing prizes.
Allum said highlights included more than 160 under-8s entrants enjoying their first day of inter-club competition in individual beach sprint, flags, wading race and relays.
Cronulla showed their strength, winning the male and female all-age relays.
These races involved 10 competitors from each club in each race ranging from under 9 to open age.
The annual Vici two kilometre Shark Island Ski Race was won by one of Cronulla’s favourite sons Chris Allum, competing for the Queenscliff club.
Mitchell Allum, of Wanda, and Allira Richardson, of Cooks Hill, won the
open male and female ironman events.
Nagaire Hatfield of Cronulla won the open and under-17s beach flags and the under-17 beach sprint, as well as being a member of the winning relay teams.
Elouera won the open male and open female taplin relays.
Host club Cronulla won the Frank Doran Trophy (659 points) from Elouera (536), North Cronulla in third (500) and Wanda fourth (401).
