THE latest snapshot of the health of the Georges River has been released by the Georges River Combined Councils' Committee, revealing a mix of conditions in the categories of vegetation, water quality, and macroinvertebrates.
Heathcote Creek received A-plus ratings across the board, while Woronora River received ratings of A-plus in two categories and an A for the macroinvertebrates category.
Moore Reserve Estuary received D-minus overall and although it scored A-minus for water quality it ranked F-minus for vegetation.
Lime Kiln Bay on the Georges River recorded B for water quality and B-minus for vegetation.
Carina Creek, the site of recent improvements by Sutherland Shire Council including the planting of 1500 seedlings and 50 trees, rated a D overall. It scored F-plus for macroinvertebrates, and A-plus for both water quality and vegetation.
Across the entire 960 square-kilometre river system, the overall health was slightly lower than at the same time last year, which was attributed to severe weather events having an impact on water quality.
As an entity the condition remained fair, although the authors said litter was visible throughout the year in the estuarine reaches of the Georges River.
