NOTHING would make Jenni Gormley happier than student activists approaching her to ask advice about grassroots campaigns.
As chairwoman of the non-partisan, financially independent Sutherland Shire Environment Centre (SSEC), she wants to see more young people rise up for the environment.
"I would love to see SSEC help younger people, or have groups of friends coming to ask for help," she said.
SSEC members had many years of experience in environmental activism and the group had charitable status, an ABN and experience in setting up technological assets, she said.
They are helping to reach out to the younger generation by awarding an annual scholarship worth $2500 and by creating events such as Speaking for the Planet, a high school public speaking competition.
"This allows them to articulate things they feel," Ms Gormley said.
"The centre has evolved with the community and has been a lovely thing to watch.
"Sutherland Shire Environment Centre has helped the community influence Sutherland Shire Council.
"Such pressure is helping to save the remnant bushland."
