AT least 250 people and 25 invited guests learned about Islam at Penshurst Mosque open day last Sunday.
The organisers would have liked a bigger turnout but said overall it was a great day for all concerned.
Spokesman Enes Topalovic said the Bosnian Muslims achieved what they set out to do: explain their religion and culture and dispel fear and ignorance as much as possible.
"Everyone who came was very interested and asked lots of questions — mainly about violence and the hijab," Mr Topalovic said.
"They would have gone home with a clearer understanding of Islam, so we are happy with the outcome."
Visitors included people who lived nearby, a number of southern Sydney politicians, a priest from St Declan's Church and Chifley MP Ed Husic, a former student of Imam Salih.
Mr Topalovic said one of the highlights of the day was when Banks MP David Coleman read a letter from Prime Minister Tony Abbott about the importance of multiculturalism.
With lots of Bosnian food to enjoy, the day had an almost party atmosphere.
Hurstville councillor Brent Thomas said: "It was a wonderful day, with the Bosnian and Islamic communities really opening themselves up in a humble and inclusive way to the whole community and continuing to demonstrate the values of peace and harmony within the St George area."
