Organised by Build Bexley Pool, residents called on Rockdale Council to deliver the new Rockdale City Aquatic Centre as outlined in the Rockdale city plan 2013-2025.
The ageing pool was closed in May, with construction on the new centre expected to start in September and be completed by May 2016.
However, the project is now in doubt after the Liberals and independent councillor Michael Nagi failed to attend at least six council meetings including a confidential session on the pool tender.
Liberals councillors include Peter Poulos, Nicholas Mickovski, Petros Kalligas, Lydia Sedrak, Paul Sedrak and Ron Bezic.
Cr Mark Hanna (independent) has been a passionate supporter of the pool and was one of 12 people to speak at the rally.
‘‘The large turnout of residents demonstrates the strength of community support for the new facility,’’ he said.
‘‘The level of frustration and anger at the deliberate blocking tactics of several councillors was abundantly evident.
‘‘I can only hope that those councillors who have sought to derail this long overdue and much-needed community facility will see fit to recognise the extent of community support and finally deliver it.’’
