OWNERS will have an easy way to get around a proposed three-month limit on the parking of boat trailers in suburban streets.
They will simply be able to move the trailer along, or across, the road.
Roads Minister Duncan Gay announced the limit this month, saying boat trailers would be impounded if they were parked for longer than three months.
Following questions from the Leader, a spokeswoman for the minister said councils would be given the power to administer the measure through an amendment to the Impounding Act, which would be put to State Parliament early next year.
"The planned changes will help councils address the problem of boat trailers left unattended and unmoved for lengthy periods of time," she said.
"Requiring owners to regularly move their trailers will ensure greater parking turnover and remove pressure on residential roads.
"It is hoped the inconvenience of requiring boat owners to regularly move their boat trailers, even if only further up the street or across the road, will prompt them to consider long-term storage options."
"This is why we are investing $5 million in dedicated off-street storage facilities.
"These new changes are just a start, and provide the ability to better monitor the situation."
The spokeswoman said it was proposed the changes apply only to boat trailers, and not include caravans.
EXTRA SECURITY
A boat trailer parked in Oleander Parade, Caringbah, hasn’t moved since it arrived early this year, residents say.
The owner has taken an extra precaution to make sure it is not stolen — chaining the trailer to a tree.
Do you think a three-month time limit will have any effect?
