ROCKDALE Library is being torn down 30 years after the "temporary" building was first opened.
Mayor Shane O'Brien and library committee members councillors Joe Awada and James Macdonald visited the site this week to see the first bricks being removed ahead of the construction of a new library.
Mayor O'Brien said that if everything went according to plan the new library should be opened in mid-2016.
"Our capital works program is on track," he said.
"This library represents a major milestone in our program to reinvigorate our town centre.
"The building will change the city's skyline and complement our historic town hall.
"Like all councillors and residents I am excited that we can finally, after 30 years, say goodbye to this temporary library.
"The new state-of-the-art, purpose- built library will provide the community with facilities and services that meet 21st century living."
While the new library is being built other branch libraries will open for longer hours.
During construction, items from the old library will be kept at Bexley Community Centre.
People can reserve any item from the online catalogue and have it delivered to a branch library to pick up.
