A SUTHERLAND Shire Scouts and Cubs group is in danger of folding up after at least 50 years.
Falling numbers of children and volunteer adult leaders at 1st Como Jannali are to blame, said a spokeswoman for the group, Anne Heptinstall.
"Should the present five Cubs become Scouts next year, at least five additional new Scouts must join for the unit to continue in 2015," she said.
"At least seven to nine new Cubs must join by the end of the year for the Cubs unit continue into next year.
"There are now 15 Scouts, most of whom will move to become Venturers at Oyster Bay next year."
The group must have active Cubs and Scouts units to remain open as closing one unit will force the closure of both units.
The group has been going since the 1950s — initially as 1st West Como, then from 1994 as 1st Como Jannali when three groups amalgamated.
The committee has been actively trying to recruit more Cubs by advertising in the area, including at schools but has received little interest.
The two Scout leaders are due to move on at the end of the year, so two new leaders are needed for 2015.
The present leaders have agreed to keep their roles for the first term of next year to ease the problem.
The group has been struggling during the past several years getting Cubs and Scouts leaders and parent helpers for the units.
What do you think is the best way to get more scouting recruits?
