GREEN might be an appealing colour to some people but to swimming pool owners it is bad news.
Pool experts have warned green indicates poor water quality that can lead to ear, nose and throat infections in swimmers.
Founded in 1992, Poolwerx, an Australian-owned pool and spa care network with more than 200 franchise territories, retail outlets and mobile vans in Australia and New Zealand, has completed a healthy-pools survey.
The survey indicated that more than 40 per cent of Australian pool owners failed to maintain healthy pH and chlorine levels throughout winter, and 57 per cent experienced a green pool within the past year.
Sans Souci Poolwerx franchise holder Stephen Dries said clear water did not necessarily mean clean water.
"A green or unhealthy pool is caused by the resulting growth of bacteria and algae when the water has a pH imbalance or insufficient chlorine levels and it's not something you can diagnose without proper water testing," Mr Dries said.
PoolWerx tips:
■ Ensure pool equipment is running properly;
■ Ensure the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6;
■ Make sure chlorine levels remain at two to three parts per million;
■ Make sure the pool fence and gate is secure;
■ Vacuum and skim the pool regularly; and organise regular professional checkups.
Cleaning your pool regularly removes debris that allows algae to thrive, and a regular pool maintenance schedule will ensure healthy, clean pool water throughout the year.
