A lay day has been called at the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons today and there will be no competition, with only small surf on offer. Event organizers will reconvene at 7:30am tomorrow to assess conditions and decide whether or not the contest is on.
The next day of competition at the Billabong Pipe Masters could see a conclusion to this year's World Title race as well as crown a Vans Triple Crown champion.
Cronulla surfers have called a “lay in bed” day as well, helped by the 20 knot southerly that blew through at 4 am, just in time to destroy the 2/3ft east swell. In fact after we got out of the surf at 6 there wasn’t another surfer out ANYWHERE in Cronulla-not a soul. It wasn’t till about 7 that a few groms paddled out to the Point and were instantly rounded up by Fin Padman who caught every wave that looked like breaking and even some that didn’t.
The Swellnet report is nothing to write to Hawaii for either with this 2/3 ft swell due to hang around through a few wind changes into the weekend, with Sunday looking like 1 ft dribble-perfect for the Wahu Surfer Groms comp due to hit our beaches this weekend.
If any of you Shire residents need a good Christmas present, today at 1pm get down to Berkelouw books at Cronulla and get Sally Fitzgibbon to give you a signed copy of her new book-“Live like Sally” especially if you have some daughters, it’s all good advice except for the chapter about staying away from the Alley! (I made that up)
Harley Ross-Webster has led the Curl Curl Boardriders to victory in the Aloha Manly Style Gromtag. Ross-Webster teamed up with his older brother Corey, to come from behind and steal the win from defending champions Elouera Boardriders. Sandon Point posted their best ever Gromtag result finishing in third position with North Narrabeen fourth.
Elouera started strongly thanks to Nathan Martin but his fellow teammates couldn’t go on with the job falling off on almost every wave ridden. Sandon Point proved to be the surprise packet of the event sneaking thru Quarter Final No.3 ahead of Cronulla.
Speaking of Cronulla,Cronulla surf luminary Steve Core is pleased to announce that the first 16mm surfing film he shot, mostly in 1971, will make a Premiere re-release to the public for the first time in over 30+ years, at a special star-studded screening evening at the Surf World Museum on the Gold Coast on Friday January 2nd, 2015.

Nic Lamb (USA) has won the Spanish Punta Galea Challenge in a moving 30-to-40-foot lineup ahead of Makuakai Rothman (HAW) and Nathan Fletcher (USA) to complete the podium.
The exciting six-men final saw the lead change hands numerous times before Lamb could settle in first and take the event win.
California’s big wave ambassador Lamb opened his wave account with an incredible 9.77 out of 10, for a long ride all the way from the outside on a 40-foot bomb. Taking control of the heat early on, Lamb managed to back-up his highest scoring ride with a bold move, dropping late on a lefthander heading straight into the rocks for a 7.00 point ride.
After four successful years in the Port Stephens region, The Ocean and Earth Southern Cross SUP Festival will relocate to the iconic Shoalhaven beaches and waterways in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
“It’s been some time since we’ve seen an event of this capacity in the Shoalhaven region, so we’re more than happy to get behind it as much as we can,” said Ocean and Earth founder and CEO Brian Cregan. “Surfing NSW and Ocean and Earth have had a long history doing events together, so when we found out that the event would be taking place in our backyard, we were more than happy to come onboard.”-So start paddling South Maurer!
Australian won another world title when Harley Ingleby (AUS) defeated Phil Rajzman (BRA) to claim his second ASP World Longboard Title at the GoPro World Longboard Championships, China hosted by Wanning (WLC). Pumping typhoon swell in the 3 to 4 foot range groomed by offshore winds set the stage for the world’s best longboarders to battle it out for the Title. It’s been five years since Ingleby won his maiden ASP World Longboard Title and now he’s realised his dream of securing a second crown.
Anyway by next week we will have a new world champ so stay tuned and go the Aussies!
